Event Description
Vanguard Repertory Company brings you the La Canada Flintridge Shakespeare's Summer Festival 2011. This year we offer three (3) exciting productions, two of which are world premier's developed by VanguardRep!!
- Opening first will be an original, world premiere play written by Matthew Kellen Burgos. After the Autumn examines the effects of post-traumatic stress on the human psyche and, perhaps more importantly, the human soul. It is the story of two men: One, a psychologist who has retreated into self-medication and is on the brink of losing his family, his career and his life. Another, a war-torn veteran who has hidden away behind silence in order to restrain his rage and conflicted spirit. Thrust together by circumstance, they struggle to find meaning when fate seems to propel them toward an end without choice. Inspired by Shakespeare’s Macbeth, After the Autumn is a contemporary tragedy that asks the question: are we fated to be who we are, or do we have the power to change our own path?
- Joining After the Autumn in rep is a short, original piece adapted by Sam Ross starring Juliet, Desdemona and Ophelia–Shakespeare's Tragic Women. The piece examines the nature of their choices by joining them in purgatory for an avante-garde piece combining text, movement and song.
- Finally, showing on days opposite to After the Autumn will be VanguardRep's original adaptation of A Midsummer Night's Dream. Patrons having already seen the adaptation which premiered in 2010 will be treated to something fresh and refined – a further adaption of last summer's hit. Those that haven't seen it should visit the website and check out the production photos and don't miss it the second time around!
The festival opens June 24, 2011 and runs Thursday through Sunday evenings closing July 31, 2011. The festival (food, drinks, music and an incredible view) starts at 7pm. All performances begin at 8:00pm in the beautiful Byrnes Amphitheatre located on the Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy's campus located at 440 St. Katherine Drive, La Canada CA 91011. Concessions are available on site but we invite you to bring food and wine as desired to enjoy before the show.
